China reports over 126,000 HIV cases

Beijing, Oct 14. (PTI): The deadly HIV/AIDS is spreading fast in China with 126,808 people infected with the virus, including 28,789 confirmed AIDS patients, a senior official said here today.

The number of HIV infected has risen by 19,818 and the patients confirmed with AIDS also rose by 4,834 since the end of 2004, the figures showed.

In March this year, vice health minister Wang Longde said that by the end of 2004, China had reported 106,990 people infected with HIV, including 23,955 patients, but the figures only accounted for 12.7 per cent of the total infected.

The death toll of HIV/AIDS had reached 7,375, deputy head of the disease control department with the Ministry of Health, Hao Yang said ahead of the 18th World AIDS Day, which falls on December 1. This year's World AIDS Day highlights participation of governments, organisations and individuals in fighting HIV/AIDS, said Hao, noting that the Chinese government has been exerting efforts in the fight.

Experts estimate that China now has 840,000 people infected with HIV including 80,000 AIDS patients.

The number of people living with HIV/AIDS in China is estimated to exceed 10 million by 2010 if no strong measures are taken.
