Over 88,000 HIV cases in Rajasthan
 
 
  Jaipur, Oct 22, (PTI):After it was first detected in Pushkar, there are now over 1,000 full-blown AIDS and 88,000 HIV positive paients in Rajasthan.
 
"The first AIDS patient was detected at Pushkar in Ajmer district and at present there are 1,284 AIDS and 88,000 HIV positive patients in the state," Rajasthan State AIDS Control Society director B L Sharma said today.
 
He was speaking at a workshop, "Reporting on HIV Issues", here jointly conducted by Rajasthan Patrika and NGO Kaiser Media Fellowships in Health.
 
Expressing serious concern, Kaiser Health working director Paini Dekhome said India has the second highest incidence of 5.1 million HIV/AIDS patients and the figure could "surpass Africa if effective measures were not taken to control the scourge".
 
As per the latest UNAIDS figures on the global HIV/AIDS situation, India has more HIV cases than any other country and the "n-style spread" is 50 times that of Uganda.
 
Statistics for 2004, put the HIV figure for South Africa at 6.29 million.
