Dr. Charles Farthing, Director for Scientific Affairs in HIV, Merck & Co. Inc.
  I am very pleased to announce that effective Dr. Charles Farthing has joined Merck & Co., Inc. as Director for Scientific Affairs in HIV in our US Human Health division. In his new role, Dr. Farthing will have the responsibility for providing expert clinical and scientific advice for HIV to the HIV Franchise at Merck and to ensure alignment and coordination of our interactions with HIV scientific leaders.
Dr. Farthing comes to us from the AIDS Healthcare Foundation in Los Angeles, where he dedicated over 13 years of services in a variety of roles including serving as the Foundation's Chief of Medicine, and also as a Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine at UCLA. Prior to joining the AIDS Healthcare Foundation, Charles had been associated for over 5 years with Bellevue Hospital and NYU Medical Center in a number of positions including Director of the AIDS Program at Bellevue. His experience also spans HIV medical and research work in the United Kingdom.
As a member of a several Professional Societies, Dr. Farthing has provided significant support to the treatment and prevention of AIDS. Charles was the Chair of the Education Committee of the American Academy of HIV Medicine and served as a board member of the American Academy of HIV Medicine, the Los Angeles Physicians' AIDS Forum, and the Elton John AIDS Foundation.
Dr. Farthing, who is Board Certified in Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases, graduated from Otago Medical School, University of Otago, Dunedin, New Zealand and completed his Infectious Diseases Fellowship at Bellevue Hospital. He has received numerous awards including, in 2005, the Outstanding HIV Physician of the Year award from Charles was also the editor in chief of the American Academy of HIV Medicine Study Guide, editions 2003-2004, and has authored numerous papers and abstracts related to HIV/AIDS.
