GlaxoSmithKline provides update on
government orders for influenza A (H1N1) vaccine

GlaxoSmithKline reported on Tuesday that 22 government orders for its pandemic influenza A (H1N1) vaccine, representing 149 million doses, have been received since August 4, and that its contracts now include agreements with 73 governments to supply a total of 440 million doses. The drugmaker could attain sales of 2 billion pounds ($3.2 billion) for its pandemic influenza vaccines over the next year.
The first shipments are beginning this week and will continue up to the first half of next year. In addition, the company noted that it is in discussions with governments for further supplies.
Commenting on the announcement, analyst Kevin Wilson of Citigroup said that although "the market may look through GlaxoSmithKline's pandemic sales as being a one-off... we believe that pandemic sales will lead to potential earnings surprises through the fourth quarter of 2009 to the second quarter of 2010 when overlaid on the rest of the business, which is now set to recover from US generic washouts."
