  WASHINGTON - Who was Gia Carangi? Gia Carangi was an American fashion model during the early 80s and was considered the first supermodel, but some including Janice Dickinson, Jean Shrimpton and Cindy Crawford challenge that title. She died from HIV complications.
 

Gia Carangi, was from an Italian father and Irish mother of Welsh ancestry and this multi-ethno product was but a beauty of its own kind and her features speak loudly of her ethnic beauty. Gia Caragi was declared a Rare Gem of the modeling industry.
 
As soon as the news of her addiction surfaced her modeling career took a dive from peak to the bottom and the heinous heroin snatched another face from the covers of fashion magazines and when in 1986 she was diagnosed with AIDS, her career faced an abrupt halt and she was admitted to Hahemann University Hospital in Philadelphia.

Gia Carangi has already appeared in Cover pages such as "Vogue in 1st April 1979; Vogue Paris in April, 1979; American Vogue in August 1980; Italian Vogue in January, 1981 and many other issues of "Cosmopolitan" during 1979-1982". Gia Carangi became famous in the modelling industry during the 70's. She was a successful model, even compared to other famous models like Janice Dickinson, Dorian Leigh,and Jean Shrimpton. Before her death, she got addicted to heroine and different types of drugs. Gia Marie Carangi was the queen of American fashion model industry from 1970 to 1980.
 
She was addicted to alcohol and drugs that ruined her career. Gia Carangi later became infected with HIV and died on November 18, 1986. "She was crying, she couldn't find her drugs. I literally had to lay her down on her bed until she fell asleep," recalled photographer Francesco Scavullo during a fashion shoot.
 
Ms. Carangi was a regular at Studio 54 and the Mudd Club. According to online reports, she started using cocaine in these clubs and shifted to heroine, eventually, contracting HIV through a shared needle.
 
Angelina Jolie portrayed the character of Gia Carangi in a biographical film in 1998. Angelina Jolie will portray this role again on a show about AIDS that will be aired tonight on Lifetime at 9 p.m.
 
All throughout her career she was the woman that the industry thought of giving the prior preference, for the reason that she had unmatched beauty Her life was as smooth as silk and everything was at the peak till 1986, when she discovered that she was ailing with HIV/AIDS. As the news broke out, it was a shocking moment for everyone, including her loved ones and the fashion industry.
 
By the time she discovered her disease and started her treatment, the sickness in her had become very complicated and was very serious. Her treatment commenced in the Hahnemann University Hospital Philadelphia. But it was as if her fate was already decided, despite all the treatment with the state of the art medicines and doctors in those years, she died at the age of 26 in November 18, 1986.
 
She was remembered by many in those days and even today it's hard for someone to forget her memories, especially if one was close to her. In her memory, a movie was made on her life named 'Gia', where Angelina Jolie played her role.
 
Her mother took care of her during her last days, her death was not made a very big issue and it wasn't given much publicity as well. Even her funeral was not much hyped. Most of her friends and colleagues did not attend her funeral. The movie Gia was a hit. It tried to increase the awareness about drugs and AIDS with the help of a famous celebrity.
