Effect of Statin Therapy on Reducing the Risk of Serious Non-AIDS-Defining Events and Non-Accidental Death in the AIDS Clinical Trials Group (ACTG) Longitudinal Linked Randomized Trials (ALLRT) Cohort

  Reported by Jules Levin
CROI 2012 March 5-8 Seattle, WA

from Jules: Statin therapy was found in this ACTG study to provide a non-statistically significant benefit of up to 19% in a reduction to first non-AIDS events or death and a suggestion of benefit in malignancies. The author Edgar Overton said there is a suggestion that greater significant benefit may be found in certain sub-groups of patients such as older patients over 50 or 60, but further studies would have to be performed to examine these questions & confirm if & how statin therapy might reduce the risk of developing non-AIDS complications & related deaths.

Here is link to webcast of session on wednesday where this study was presented as one of several oral presentations in the session called: "Metabolic and Cardiovascular Complications"
