THE RISK FOR HCC AMONG PATIENTS WITH CHRONIC HCV INFECTION AND ADVANCED HEPATIC FIBROSIS FOLLOWING SVR

  Reported by Jules Levin
AASLD Nov 1-4 2013 Wash DC

From Jules: By 2030 app. 45% of patients with chronic HCV infection is expected to have cirrhosis......This study examined the risk for developing HCC (liver cancer) for patients who achieved SVR.........study reports: 'Patients with HCV-induced cirrhosis who attain SVR remain at risk for HCC'.....the HCC rate after 8 years followup was 8.5%......after 7=8 yrs followup the risk for developing HCC for patients >60 yrs old was 12.2%, for those 45-60 the rate was 9.7% & for patients <45 yrs old the rate was 2.6% highlighting the increased risk when older......platelet count was associated with disease severity in univariate analysis and marginally in multivariate analysis while AST/ALT ratio was marginally associated in univariate analysis (see slide below)......Among these patients, the risk of HCC was associated with:

- Age (patients 45-60 & >60 had 8-9 times increased risk for developing HCC compared to patients <45)
- Severity of liver disease
- Diabetes mellitus'
........."recommend continued HCC surveillance among patients with cirrhosis and SVR"
