HIV infection induces age-related changes to monocytes and innate immune activation in young males which persist despite cART......Despite antiretroviral therapy, young HIV-positive patients had the same monocyte defects as older HIV-negative controls......suggesting HIV may accelerate age-related changes to monocytes. Importantly, these defects persist in virologically suppressed HIV-positive individuals......changes to monocyte phenotype, function and telomere length that closely resemble those observed in elderly controls aged approximately 30 years older. Furthermore, our data suggest these immune defects are not fully restored by cART."

"Here we directly compared monocytes from young HIV+ males with young and elderly healthy controls and found that young HIV+ individuals show changes to monocyte phenotype, function and telomere length that closely resemble those observed in elderly controls aged approximately 30 years older.

"HIV infection increases monocyte activation by a level equivalent to up to 13 years of aging.....

.....This indicates viremic and VS HIV+ individuals have similar levels of activation biomarkers as uninfected controls aged up to 13 and 4 years older respectively........

.......Conclusion: HIV infection confers an increase in monocyte activation equivalent to up to 13 years of normal ageing in Viremic individuals and up to 4 years in VS individuals."

Activation Marker Levels With Undetectable Viral Load Match Those of Uninfected People 4 Years Older

http://www.natap.org/2014/IAC/IAC_54.htm

HIV-positive people with an undetectable viral load have monocyte activation marker levels equivalent to those of HIV-negative people 2 to 4 years older, according to results of a 309-person Australian comparison [1]. HIV-positive people with uncontrolled viral replication have activation marker levels equivalent to those of HIV-negative people 9 to 13 years older.
