Dear Dr. Chung,

I am writing to ask you a questions regarding treatment for hepatitis C. I am a recovering addict and currently on a methadone maintainence program. I recently finished treatment for hepatitis C. I was on Rebetron, but unfortunatly, the treatment failed me. Because I did not respond to combo I have heard that I may not be a good candidate for Peg. Is this true? I live in Canada and as of now patients arent being treated with peg yet. Im sure it will be available here soon. My genotype is 1a and because of that I knew that my chances of responding to treatment were not that great, but I was quite upset to hear that when peg is available that I may not be able to do it. If you can give me any info on this I would really appreciate it. Thanks very much for your time.

Sincerely.
Tami

The data are not yet complete, but the suggestion is if you fail rebetron, the response rates to PEGINTRON + ribavirin are in the neighborhood of 15-20%.this is a bit discouraging, but I would recommend it if you have more advanced liver disease.
