Dear Dr. Chung,

I was diagnosed with AIDS in April, '97. I felt fortunate because at that time HAART had just arrived on the scene. As a result of the medicine, I was able to rebound from death's door. Problem is I now have liver damage (fibrosis). I'm convinced that this damage to my liver is a direct result of faithfully adhereing to my HIV drug regimine for four + years. As a result I stopped taking all HIV meds in July '01. Stangely enough I feel better than I have in years, and my viral load and T-cell count are "good' under the circumstances. Do you know anything about HAART causing liver damage?

Thank you,

HAART can cause liver damage - however, which of the meds is responsible is difficult to say, and there are many cofactors (HCV, HBV, alcohol) that complicate the picture. it is also not clear whether you did not already have the liver damage before the HAART. it will be important to determine whether any of the cofactors exists in your case, and to follow your liver picture closely over the next few years.
