Can repeated treatments using the same type of interferon can later cause antibodies to develop against alpha interferon itself?

Dear Dr. Chung,

I would like to know what role quasi species plays in the treatment of patients with HCV. My main question is whether repeated treatments using the same type of interferon can later cause antibodies to develop against alpha interferon itself. Also, will a change in brand name avert this problem if it is indeed one. I have been treated with Schering's version but have never managed to get my viral load undetectable. I have a normal liver enzyme level but I know that is not the entire picture.

Antibodies do form against IFNs but their significance is uncertain. The quasispecies may play a role in nonresponse to interferon. I would consider a liver biopsy if you have not had one to determine whether you really need to be retreated.
