My insurance company (Cigna) will not pay because I was a non-responder.

Dear Dr. Chung,

I was a non-responder to the interferon and ribavirin three years ago and now was going to try the peg with ribavirin, however my insurance company (Cigna) will not pay because I was a non-responder. Have you ran into that and do I have any alternatives?

If you have sufficiently advanced liver scarring you should consider an NIH trial called HALT-C, which is being done across the country. this trial will provide medication (PEG + ribavirin) to see if you can become a responder, but if you do not, will offer a randomized choice between low-dose PEG and observation for 3.5 years. you can consult the NIH web page to learn further details.

If you have mild disease, then you may wish to wait for better therapies in a few years, or you can have your doctor contact the insurer for approval.
