Tell me doc is there more and more studies of better treatments in the works????

Dear Dr. Chung,

Hello doctor, I was wondering all we here about geno type 1 as not being a good geno type for treatment. You don't here to much of geno type 2 persons as non responders. My husband went through 1 year of combo treatments and was non detected at 6 months but continued the treatments from hell (excuse me) To find out at the end of the year he was detected again.

My husband is 48 years of age and has had it they think about 18 years we have been married for 15 years. he does have the early stages of cirrhosis. At this point I fell doctors are trying hard and more serious about a cure for this illness, and I have a feeling this will become a epidemic out numbering aids and cancer combined by 2010.

Tell me doc is there more and more studies of better treatments in the works???? I have been studying this disease for 5 years now. Pegasys sounds okay but still waiting for something better before I want him to go through those side effects again.......is there still hope???? Thank you for your time.

There are other more specific agents for HCV being developed - however, it will likely be at least 2-3 years before they become appropriate for clinical practice - thus for some patients with more advanced disease who have failed treatment we have tried to examine other strategies, such as lowdose PEGinterferon. You may wish to consider this with your doctor. We can expect, however, that once the new treatments arrive, we will be in a much better position to treat pts who had problems with therapy or who were nonresponders.
