Dear Dr. Chung,

I recently had my spleen removed due to an accident. It seems my symptoms from my hep c have increased dramatically. These symptoms inc. extreme fatigue, joint pain, mm pain, sleeplessness, headache and sometimes I notice a strong unusual smell to my urine. Truthfully I had no one these symptoms before. What role does my spleem have in my hep c?

There are no good data on this subject, but i am not aware that splenectomy worsens the course of HCV liver disease. you may want to have a blood test for cryoglobulins checked, as this may cause some of the symtpoms you describe. you may also wish to consider treating the HCV if these symptoms persist. if they go away with successful treatment, then that will be an argument that they were attributable to HCV.
