Have forgone treatment until now, but wondering if I should persue the new treatment in hopes of clearing the virus..

Dear Dr. Chung,

I am a 54 year old female diagnosed 12 years ago with HCV..enzyme levels are normal or slighly elevated, viral load under 600,00 and liver biopsy stage 2. Unaware of genotype. Have forgone treatment until now, but wondering if I should persue the new treatment in hopes of clearing the virus..Have been on silymarin for many years .assuming I contracted the disease in a transfusion 30 years ago, it's progression seems slow..Can I expect it will continue to creep or should I consider treatment? Thanks so much..

I think the genotype can really make a difference here. if you are genotype 2 or 3, you could be very successful (80% or better) eliminating the virus with as brief as 6 months of therapy. if you are genotype 1, the odds fall to about 42% - you may be able to justify watchful waiting (including periodic liver biopsies) in that case until therapies get even better.
