Is it true that getting hepatitis A is deadly for a person who has chronic hepC?

Dear Dr. Chung,

Is it true that getting hepatitis A is deadly for a person who has chronic hepC? Why is the hepA-vaccination not standard procedure as soon as hepC has been diagnosed? And is hepA-vaccination safe when the liver is already affected by hepC - fibrosis or even cirrhosis?

I don't dare to travel to (for instance) thailand because of the shots you need for such trips. Are there any data on this subject?

thank you so much,

Hepzibah

We recommend HAV vaccination for those pts with chronic HCV. Those with brand new HCV infection should be considered for early treatment with antiviral therapy.
