Any suggestion about how the hep. C can be treated without depressive side effects?

Dear Dr. Chung,

My partner is hiv positive, manic depressive, and has hepatitis c. no drugs are being prescribed as of yet for the hiv. The manic depressive drugs are doing the job. His doctor does not want to prescribe drugs to treat the hep. C because of the depressive side effects. Any suggestion about how the hep. C can be treated without depressive side effects.

If the depression is VERY WELL controlled for some period of time, and there is excellent communication between him and his doctors, then he may still be a candidate for PEG IFN and ribavirin. this has been our approach, and we have successfully gotten pts through. If the liver disease is mild, though, then it may make more sense to wait for better drugs down the road (3-5 years from now).
