KATRINA HIV/AIDS EMERGENCY FUND

The impact of Hurricane Katrina has changed the lives of well over a million individuals on the Gulf Coast of the United States, specifically in Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama. Many communities have opened their doors to care for displaced individuals and families, including those with compromised health due to HIV/AIDS. People living with HIV/AIDS, and other serious health conditions, are at extreme risk of contracting common illnesses that may become life-threatening very quickly.

The National AIDS Fund, our network of 29 Community Partnerships and over 350 grantee organizations across the United States are leading the way to ensure that no one with HIV/AIDS dies due to lack of food, shelter, clean water or medications. In the first week following Katrina our network already identified and provided services to well over 50 HIV+ individuals and families through providers in Houston, TX; Memphis, TN; and Oklahoma - and more are being identified every day!

The National AIDS Fund has a 17-year history as the only organization solely dedicated to securing and directing national private-sector resources to local communities impacted by HIV/AIDS. We will again provide leadership to save the lives of HIV+ individuals impacted by Hurricane Katrina. We are pleased to report that the Elton John AIDS Foundation is the first major contributor to the Emergency Fund with a gift of $50,000.

We are coordinating all of our efforts with other national, regional and local HIV/AIDS and public health organizations as well as the other major relief organizations. We will identify the HIV+ individuals who are relocated across the United States and ensure that they receive the services they need.

Your leadership and financial support are critical to the survival of people living with HIV/AIDS in this time of extraordinary need! Please join us in delivering water, food, housing and medications to many of the most vulnerable individuals impacted by the hurricane - people living with HIV/AIDS.
