Can he get his liver transplant?

Dear Dr. Chung,

my roomate id hiv/hep c w/cirrohis - grade 3 stage 4, he needs a liver transplant but was told he had to be hiv undetectable for 6 months. he was hiv undectable for years, he only became detectable when they changed his hiv medicines (they said crixivan was to toxic for liver). He is now undectable for 1 month, we are wondering if he would be an exception to the rule, he feels it is unnecessary to wait since his hiv was only detectable for 3 months out of 8 years. Can he get his liver transplant? Please let me know thanks

Unfortunately i can not intervene - there are guidelines set at each individual center. however, i agree that this may be a mitigating circumstance. perhaps the more important point to make here is that whether he has to wait 6 months or not, his getting a liver depends on his place on the list, not on how long he waited. if he is not so sick, then he may be still be very low on the list. if on the other hand he is very sick, he would rise to the top or near the top once he was listed. you should be persistent in following this through.
