Dear Dr. Chung,

Is their any value to performing CT scans anually on hepatitis patients who have not developed any new symptoms? I have had this disease for seventeen years. I have been treated for six months with interferon and am trying to determine the adviseability of starting the combo treatment. I have had two heart bypass operations(the last 17 yrs. ago) and am 66 years of age.

Regular CT, ultrasound or MRI scans are warranted in patients who have cirrhosis of the liver (or unknown status) to monitor for the development of liver cancer. if cirrhosis is known not to be present, then they can be deferred. i would speak to your MD to determine the advisability of combination therapy- this would depend on your previous liver biopsy findings.
